Aortic Dissection - A Fatal ThreatBy ManuPosted On 21-Mar-2018
The aorta is a large blood vessel that starts from the heart and carries blood out of the heart to the rest of the body. Dissection of the aorta means that leakage of blood, interior of the blood vessel, or outside of the arterial lumen. As the leaking of blood progresses, it may cause a split between the middle layer and inner layers of the wall of the aorta. This happens if the inner layer of aorta tears. This condition is relatively uncommon, but it is often fatal.
Symptoms of a dissection of the aorta
Aortic dissection symptoms are difficult to differentiate from other heart conditions. There will be a feeling that something sharp or tearing in the chest with severe pain.
Other signs and symptoms are:
- Pain can move to the shoulder, neck, arm, jaw, abdomen, or hips
- Rapid, weak pulse
- fainting or dizziness
- Shortness of breath and trouble breathing
- The pain often moving to the arms and legs
- Anxiety and a feeling of doom
- Pale skin (pallor)
- Pain in the abdomen
- Heavy sweating (clammy skin)
- Stroke symptoms
Causes of dissection of the aorta
Doctors believe that high blood pressure is a contributing factor of aortic dissection, because it causes strain on the walls of your arteries, although the exact cause is unknown. Anything that weakens the aortic wall cause aortic dissection. It may include inherited conditions also.
Types of aortic dissection surgeries
In this type of surgery, incision is made over the breastbone, to allow access to the heart. The damaged portion of the aorta is replaced with a graft - a tube the same size as the aorta. The operation is performed on a motionless and bloodless field, by stopping heart-beat. A heart-lung bypass machine is used to maintain heart circulation.
Endovascular surgery has a minimally invasive procedure involves making some tiny incisions in blood vessels. Long thin tubes are inserted into the vessels to the point where the dissection is located. It does not require a heart-lung bypass machine and results in faster healing. It is suitable for the patients with dissection of descending aorta.
Valve-sparing surgery is used for operations on the part of the aorta closest to the heart, aortic root. It involves replacement of the damaged portion only. Valve-sparing surgery is suitable for patients whose aortic valve is damaged.
Dr. Kuldeep Chulliparambil is the chief heart surgeon at Renai medicity, Palarivattom and he is known as the top heart surgeon India. He performed more than ten thousand heart surgeries. The best aortic dissection surgery in India is provided by him at affordable cost.
