An aorta is the main artery (blood vessel) in human body originating from the left ventricle(one of the chambers of the heart) and it supplies oxygenated blood from the heart to all parts of the body. Due to Injury, in the innermost layer of the aorta, blood flows only in between the layers of aortic wall and hence the layers get parted. Surgery is done either through an opening in the chest or by endovascular aneurysm repair.
Sudden onset of severe chest pain, Neck jaw pain, Syncope, Altered mental status, Cerebrovascular accident, Numbness and tingling, Horner Syndrome, Cerebrovascular accident, dyspnea, hemoptysis, abdominal pain, and fever are the symptoms.

Common medications and surgery is the treatment available for aortic dissection. In surgical treatment, the damaged aortic portion is replaced with a Dacron graft. Endovascular repair is considered as the preferred treatment for aortic dissection.
People with high blood pressure are vulnerable to aortic dissection. Smoking is also a factor that increases the chance for aortic dissection. Aortic dissection is more common in males than in females.
