WHAT IS TOTAL ARTIFICIAL HEART ?
Now a days devices are available which can take up entire function of heart both left and right. Basically on either side two elactromagnets are arranged in such a way that a centrifugal force is created which help to pump blood forward.
With the current technology the main disadvantage of this device is that , the energy requirement is too high that the rechargeable power source has to be carried outside the body connected to the implanted device by a line called drive line exiting through the skin.
Patient has to be on anticoagulation in addition to carrieing the powersource with its power exit line whereever he or she goes.
WHEN IS TOTAL ARTIFICIAL HEART IMPLANTED ?
Total artificial heart is implanted either as bridge to transplant or as destination therapy.
It is used as bridge to transplant when the condition is too severe that waiting for transplant is too risky. It is used as destination therapy whenever heart failure is too advanced but there are contra-indication for heart transplantation.
It is preferred when heart failure is terminal inspite of all other options, but heart is not available urgently, waiting period is going to be too long or there is contra-indication for transplantation.
WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS OF TOTAL ARTIFICIAL HEART ?
Mechanical failure, anticoaugulant related complications, infection at the exit of drive line, etc are the complications.
