MEDIASTINAL TUMOURS

 

WHAT IS MEDIASTINUM  ?

Mediastinum is the part of thoracic cavity between sternum and vertebral column and it contain heart, esophagus,trachea, and other structures.

WHAT ARE THE TYPE OF MEDIASTINAL TUMOURS ?

 

Tumours can arise from any structure in the mediastinum, notably neural tissues, lympahatic tissues, thymus, totipotent cells,etc.

They can occur in young children in which case ,they are usually benign neuromas in the posterior mediastinum.

In the 30 to 50 age group , the tumours are mainly malignant, lymphomas,thymomas or germ cell tumours.

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT OF MEDIASTINAL TUMOURS  ?

Benign tumours are removed surgically either by open surgery or minimally invasive thoracoscopy.

Malignat tumours need a combined approach of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy depending upon its histopathology.
